Malusi Ninela

I come from Ntuzuma G Section in KwaZulu-Natal — a community rich in spirit, even when resources were limited.

I am the youngest of seven — five brothers and two sisters — raised in a household where formal employment was not part of everyday life. It was an upbringing where school fees, uniforms, and even daily meals often depended on faith, creativity, and the support of those around us. Those early experiences shaped who I am in every way.

Despite the circumstances, I carried a quiet determination. I became the first in my family to pursue a university education. Between 2007 and 2010, I studied at the Durban University of Technology, supported by an NSFAS bursary that covered the essentials, but little beyond that.

What carried me through was the kindness of people — individuals who offered clothes, meals, and textbooks as soon as I was honest enough to share my story. From that, I learned an important lesson early: vulnerability is not weakness; it is a bridge to opportunity.

In 2011, a pivotal moment arrived — a job opportunity that took me from Durban to Centurion, Gauteng. It marked the beginning of a new chapter. I later settled in Midrand and then Sandton, and by 2014, I had acquired my first property and a car — milestones that held deep meaning for someone who grew up with very little.

In 2017, I relocated to Cape Town, where I continue to grow my career, support my family, and invest in the future. Every step forward reminds me of where the journey began — and strengthens my commitment to giving back and helping create pathways for others.

“The right attitude, discipline, and focus — you ought to make it.”

Reaching Back

I know what it feels like to stand at a crossroads with no guidance, no connections, and no resources.

Every year, I dedicate time to supporting learners from disadvantaged communities as they transition from high school to university. I help with university applications, securing NSFAS funding, and finding school residences — all completely free.

I do this because someone reached out to me when I had nothing. Strangers believed in my potential before I fully believed in it myself. Now it’s my turn to be that person for someone else.

I’ve been doing this for years, and I won’t stop. If my journey from Ntuzuma to here proves anything, it’s that the right support at the right time can change everything.

Motivational Speaking

I share my story — from Ntuzuma to the corporate world — to inspire confidence in those who need it most. If my journey can shift even one person’s mindset from “I can’t” to “I will,” it’s worth every word.
